Volpone Q&A
We caught up with Marshall Defender Nyanhete to discuss all the latest news from the Volpone rehearsals. Find out how how he is getting into the role, what the experience has been like so far, and why reinventing classics is so important.
What sort of person is going to love the show?
Marshall - What's wonderful about this play is that there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Like the characters, we’ve all been a bit guilty of prioritising the wrong things from time to time. If you don’t mind having a laugh at your own expense, then you’ll love it!
Why do you think it’s important to renew classics for new audiences?
M - Classics are important because they give us a chance to tap into another time, see how others lived and be reminded that we’re all the same, and that being human is a shared experience. I feel the plays that survive the longest are always the most truthful - even crazy ones like this!
Do you see any of yourself in your character?
M - I hate to admit it, since I’m playing Volpone who can be a bit of a meany, but yes! We’re both guilty of letting our ideas run away from us.
If you could play any role, what would it be?
M - I would play anyone that makes me smile
What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
M - I think of the silliest thing I can imagine, and then try my best to stop laughing before someone sees me!
Do you have any tips for individuals who are just starting out?
M - Never be embarrassed of being yourself. That’s your super power.
