South West Focus… Tiverton

Newport Primary School with Claire Ayres from Beaford Arts.jpg

In the first South West Focus we take a peek at Tangle's work in Tiverton. Here's some of what they're saying about Tangle:

Heathcoat School: The students definitely benefited from the sessions and felt comfortable to explore the issues of diversity. They worked with new people and with visitors and it was an AMAZING opportunity for them to work with a different stimulus and produce a final product.

Tiverton High School: They gained a greater understanding of the wider world, other people’s problems, concerns, ideas and dreams. They have shown good empathy with those who have a different culture, belief or colour of skin. Learning about other cultures and the challenges faced by people within these cultures, is very useful. Good to open the chidren’s eyes to what others are feeling, thinking etc.

St John’s Catholic Primary School: It was fantastic how it was structured and with an obvious outcome and yet it came across as very relaxed and fluid. The delivery of civil rights for all was subtle and yet I believe that it will strike a chord in the children such that when it is discussed in more depth maybe at High School the children will remember what they did today. Some of the children in my class might not venture far out of Tiverton except for a week long holiday in Spain so to experience different cultures through the arts and actually meeting people from the cultures enables understanding and respect.

Beaford Arts: Cultural Diversity is a big issue in our rural communities as they are not so diversified. Using this as a calling card to other schools and communities would undoubtedly build momentum. A wonderful medium for exploring intricate and thought provoking issues. Great too to see some of the black students have a resonance, a connection, where they might normally feel in the minority.
